With the establishment of Mhow cantonment after the uprising of 1857, an Officers’ club was established contiguous to the riding club and polo ground in 1860. Later, when the 5th Indian division established its HQs in Mhow the golf browns came into existence as part of the golf course contiguous to the slopes of Mhow fort and golf view area. The present Heritage building (DSOMI) was handed over to the club of Central India (CCI). Prior to CCI it was the “Senior Railway Institute”. After the Second World War the royalty of Indore got associated with the club. The patron of the club till 1970 were the Holkar kings of Indore state. Various civil dignitaries were also its members.
Club of central India was handed over to the Army, and was renamed as Defence Services Officer’s Institute (DSOI) in 1970. On 24 July 1970 the foundation stone was laid by Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw (then COAS) for the present day Manekshaw Hall.
The army golf club located within the Infantry School premises, and Bercha sailing club, which were earlier part of this institute were separated in 1998. With the management of the club coming to the Defence authorities, the Holkars of Indore and civil members withdrew their membership and patronage.
